One thing I think might be fun with this system is the tension/foreshadowing in a room with big new monsters or bosses... fighting small creatures with huge monsters looming/peeking out from the shadows, with the clock ticking down til they spawn... hopefully it's fun anyway :)

A few more minor things to get basic loop all set up, then I can focus on making an interesting set of enemies, rather than just fighting 20 copies of my test guy... looking forward to making some real big ones!
