I have always been pissed that JRR Tolkien just wrote about Hobbits, Elves and Dwarves as if a straight, white, male, human could even attempt to conceptualize their struggles, and don’t even get me started on the Ents.

But, isn't this the sign of a good Author? To be able to research and capture a culture then write about the people as if those people really existed in a fiction story? Saying you cant write about other races is limiting the field of creativity and scope.

Not the issue. I encourage you to read & consider the arguments that tons of Latino writers, journalists etc inc myself have made on this. It’s not about ‘canceling’ or ‘censoring.’ Also, even Cummins expressed regret about the books tone deaf rollout and issues w the narrative.

How about authors research and write thoughtfully about what they want and we judge its relevant literary merits? With this mindset, we risk white authors avoiding adding minority characters for fear of backlash from an inadvertent percieved microaggression.
