Not being a wise guy, but some people must really *be* innocent, and have valid alibis - should those people not disclose their alibis when questioned? Or have I been watching too much courtroom TV?

Talk to a lawyer first and have them manage any disclosure.

This is why people loathe defense attorneys. Good legal advice is not always (or often) good moral advice. Being a savvy defendant is not the same things as being a good person and sometimes one has to choose one to the exclusion of the other.
