      SHUT UP FOR FREE SPEECH

I mean, seriously. Is the proposition now that, to support free speech, you have to stay on a panel or event with someone whose views you despise, despite feeling that your presence gives them legitimacy and cover? That you can't say "no thanks, I'm out?"

I mean, why does so much "support free speech" rhetoric now seem to boil down to "shut up, abandon your freedom of association, abandon your freedom of conscience, and pretend awful people aren't awful, for the discourse"?

Maybe one way to look at it is this: (1) you're mad at reactions to speech for falling short of your stated values. (2) Are you imposing the same value judgments on the initial speech drawing the reaction? (3) Why the fuck not?

Because the "for the discourse" people aren't the ones harmed by the awful people. It's easy to be a circumspect intellectual when the espoused ideas hurt other (primarily brown) people.

If you give the time of day to right-wing extremists who have been clearly operating in bad faith and working the refs for thirty fucking years then that's where you end up. It's been the Age of Nixon all along my man.

Conservatives don't like fellow-travelers being left in the cold. French (I think) thinks if it can happen to Bannon it could happen to Shapiro or him.

Because that’s the way fascism and hate creeps, by slowly gaining acceptance in larger circles and bigger platforms. People are finally waking up to that reality, and peddlers have no other argument at their disposal.
