This just happened at the Franklin stop in Brooklyn. Shabbat is coming in so I gotta go. Sending love to the people in NYC, and praying for a more just, less punitive world.

FYI the reason I shared this was because it seemed painfully clear that if anything had gone wrong, that young man might have easily been killed. Not sure if it’s clear from the video, but it was obvious.

Ok, Shabbat is over. Some observations in no particular order: 1. In the car, no one was scared of the young man. Everyone was terrified of the police. 2. Seeing the terror in his eyes will stay with me forever. 3. Seeing the anger in some of the officers’ eyes will as well.

4. Just as disturbing was beforehand hearing all the other young black men scared of what might happen. You could tell they were scared for their lives, even though the police weren’t looking for them. 5. The fact that this is what happens when things go “well” says it all.

Here is the NYPD response after a request for information about why this occurred as it did. Dumbfounding.https://twitter.com/dmoritzrabson/status/1188216667127476224?s=21 …

Grateful to NBC New York for covering this. In it, they describe that he ended up getting arrested for “theft of services.” In other words, subway fare evasion.https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/NYPD-Crew-Rushes-Into-Subway-Train-563926651.html …

For those unaware, the NYPD has upped its presence in subways in order to capture what are often simply people with low incomes jumping turnstiles. I don’t know why exactly they thought he had a weapon, but at the absolute least this should be investigated and looked into.

Even when I was in the train and fully aware he might have a gun, the only scary thing about the experience was the police response. That they arrested him despite being wrong about the weapon alone is egregious.

That fact is included in my thread. And as I mentioned, even aware that he might have a weapon, everyone on the train was terrified only of the police. That’s because he was fully cooperating while they aimed guns at a crowded train, then tackled him.https://twitter.com/nypdtransit/status/1188544296091357189?s=21 …

Someone just sent me a video from another angle. In this one, you can clearly see multiple policemen pulling out their guns, as well as terrified passengers running out of the car, something I hadn’t even noticed. Don’t know who to credit. Will update as soon as I do.pic.twitter.com/w4SF5rISB3
