I’ve never been promoted, in 20+ years of working in software. Hadn’t fully realized it until I saw this thread & thought through all the ‘transitions’ I’ve been through. The more I think about it the more sense it makes; the cost and effort of promoting someone in highly specialised roles, vs. Taking someone new on who can fail while you’re covering the bases is much higher. Long term your retention suffers but that’s often not a priority.
