Today, a trial begins in North Carolina state court over the GOP’s legislative gerrymanders. There’s a strong chance the 6-1 Democratic NC Supreme Court will strike them down & require fairer districts for the 2020 elections #NCpolhttps://twitter.com/mel_bough/status/1150756806844698632 …

Without Republican gerrymandering, Democrats may have flipped North Carolina's state House in 2018 under a nonpartisan map like this one. It was drawn without regard to partisanship except where needed for the VRA, so the Dem NC Supreme Court could make it even fairer like PA didpic.twitter.com/a64xD1Ms5F

North Carolina Democrats won the statewide popular vote by 51-49 in 2018 yet Republicans retained their gerrymandered majorities. So of course the GOP's lawyer claims the anti-gerrymandering lawsuit is what's truly undemocratic #UpIsDownhttps://twitter.com/mel_bough/status/1150775494905933824 …

Do you know why a legal challenge hasn't be introduced yet in state court for the NC Congressional maps?

Not yet, but they should be able to expedite it (& skip the Court of Appeals)

Im confused why this wasn’t challenged much sooner. Were they waiting for a more favorably composed state supreme court?

I'd assume so. It was only 4-3 Dem after 2016, & the federal lawsuit remained ongoing. Now it's 6-1 Dem, & the federal case ended in 2018. Plus, we now have the 2018 elections as evidence, where a 51-49 Dem popular vote still resulted in GOP majorities

It should be virtually the same as the Pennsylvania situation. Plaintiffs are arguing it solely under a practically identical provision in NC's constitution
