It was a regional organiser who wrote that (of Stoke I think - Stoke was always a problem): they invariably wanted an ‘efficient’ party. I’ve read many Ward & CLP minutes of that period. They’re wild.

This crisis has been bubbling under the surface ever since the fall of class voting & the emergence of the new Middle class in the 1980s, to some extent the Party is the product of an extinct social cleavage that has somehow managed to survive but it doesn’t understand why.

My impression is that party membership was often higher in (Tory held) middle class wards than in safe Labour ones. What has changed is that many of those Tory wards (like Didsbury, Manchester where I grew up and Nether Edge, Sheffield where I now live) have since gone Labour.
