I presented my preliminary findings from my PhD research at the Bradley Tabletop Symposium Zones of Connection. I got some questions, requests for slides ...so here goes. One of the big headlines: who designed the Top 400 #BoardGameGeek games? Here's what I found #boardgamespic.twitter.com/YRvPIvHBPo

The Top 400 BGG games analyzed: 540 white men, 16 white women, 24 BIPOC men and 3 non-binary designers were listed as designing or co-designing those games.

The labour of game design is overwhelmingly white male at 92.6% (!!!), an overwhelmingly strong skew. North American population demography skews toward women as the majority at 50.4% or 18.6 million in Canada; 50.5% or 165.8 million citizens in the U.S. #RepresentationMatterspic.twitter.com/BeKNi4Vavj

The artwork on the covers of the top-ranked 200 #BoardGameGeek games also skewed heavily toward the white and the male. 76.8% of the characters analyzed were masculine-presenting (men/boys) and 82.5% of the characters were white presenting. #RepresentationMatters #tabletopgamespic.twitter.com/oQOLOqJaxv

A warning from Hollywood: an industry that loses $$$$ Every. Single. Year. by not including authentic inclusive representation (AIR) (that's positive, rich, non-stereotypical, diverse casting). A movie w/ a budget of $159M, no AIR will lose $32.2M (pre-pandemic) opening weekendpic.twitter.com/rbjjScNdlE

One of the biggest parts of my research looked at who board gamers *are*. My online survey of avid board gamers conducted last year included a richly diverse community of die-hard, devoted passionate board gamers. So much so they board game at least once a week at a rate of 70.7%pic.twitter.com/ntpc8RI3po

They are also v. diverse. 67.8% reported being in their 30s, 40s; 80.2% identified as women, non-binary, trans; 74.9% identified as white; 52.8% identified as LGBTQiIA+; 20.4% identified as BIPOC; 78.9% reported being in a relationship with another person(s)#RepresentationMatterspic.twitter.com/2mv61vjXVx

Did the respondents care about limited, or negative representation in board gaming? Overwhelmingly: YES. Indeed, deeply, passionately. They linked to positive representation to their ability to ENJOY a game. Again, overwhelmingly. #RepresentationMatterspic.twitter.com/nDiL9rch9K

I located some really sad, troubling findings in the data. For example, you are more likely to see a creature that doesn't exist (dragons, orcs, imps, etc) or an alien than you are likely to see an image of a woman on the top 200 #BoardGameGeek covers.pic.twitter.com/Sf7zi69BBz

Some of the saddest findings of all, as I looked at the data, was that you are more likely to see an image of a bird or a horse on a board game cover than you are to see the image of a Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour woman on the top 200 #BoardGameGeek covers.pic.twitter.com/nzWgXfD1Gm

A chart that shows that there is 88 images of birds on the Top 200 BGG covers versus 35 images of Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour

I noted these decisions can't be based on any kind of consumer/audience analyses, based on a cursory look at population demographics in some of the biggest consumer hubs, urban centres in the U.S. and Canada. I shared a warning to publishers to rethink their 'imagined audience.'pic.twitter.com/XwOJZlpwCW

Toronto population is 49.9% BIPOC, 50.2% white.
New York City 57.27% BIPOC and 42.73% white
Chicago population 50.02% BIPOC, 49.9% white
