Every week, we will be highlighting an organization/mutual aid fund/collective that is committed to supporting Black communities and liberation, along with abolition work. This week, we're talking about @survivepunish, an abolitionist org that was founded in Chicago in 2016.
Survived and Punished focuses on fighting the criminalization of survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence. There are three chapters nationwide- one in Chicago, one in New York (@survivepunishNY), and one statewide affiliate in California.
The org emerged out of the collective efforts of the Free Marissa Now and Stand with Nan-Hui campaigns, which mobilized around a Black mother and survivor of domestic violence and a Korean mother and survivor of domestic violence who were criminalized for their self-defense.
@survivepunish is an abolitionist organization, meaning that it advocates for the abolition of the entire prison-industrial complex, including policing, prisons, and the entire carceral state. They are engaged in a number of activist and direct action work to pursue this future.

They hold several commutation campaigns, fighting for clemency for criminalized survivors. Commutations in sentences are primarily granted by governors with executive powers.
