The US is a constitutional republic, not a direct democracy.
-
... so is Canada. Mass disenfranchisement is bad for any society that rests its legitimacy in the consent and participation of the governed.

Well said.
-
There are a lot of countries that allow those who are incarcerated to vote. There are two states that don't take voting away: Maine and Rhode Island. We need to allow every man and woman who is a citizen to vote. Don't they get counted on the Census??????
-
It's Vermont. Maine and Vermont.
-
If these people want to vote, they should focus on staying out of prison. You lose rights when you’re put into prison and voting should be one of them. If you couldn’t exist in society without issue, they shouldn’t be allowed to vote
-
Since they are taking the rights of men and women to vote then why do they continue to put them on the census. You feel like somebody who was in prison is not a citizen. If they are not a citizen then they should not be on the census. Right?

They had a say. Before they committed a crime and ended up in jail, you not behind bars to dictate who puts you there and who comes after. Once you out of jail you should have your rights restored because you are being reintroduced back into society. But in jail? Hell no.
-
Just because they are in jail doesn’t make them less of a citizen. Add that justice is not blind in this country. If you are White and moneyed, you rarely if ever get locked up in the first place.
-
YOU CAN argue for SOME prisoners those charged on little stuff ( marijuana charges ) but for the vast majority the murders and the rapist? If they get out of jail there rights should be restored but not while in jail.
-
Let’s talk about all the small rural areas with local elections and high incarceration rates, prisoners would DOMINATE elections. You can guess where local politicians would be banking.
-
You know we have a concept called absentee ballots, right?

An argument that I'm not seeing made enough on this is that we know for a fact that a certain percentage of those convicted of felonies will be innocent. How can we justify a blanket ban on voting when we know many of those who will lose their rights, lost them unfairly.
-
Not only that, but many conservative states have incredibly low thresholds for things like marijuana possession felonies. How can we justify taking away someone's right to vote for non-violent drug offences?

I don’t want rapists, murderers, pedophiles, etc having any voting power. I hope they revoke this law here. Once they have served their debt to society then they can have their civil freedoms, including the right to vote back.

True democracy only works when everyone has a voice. If they're subjected to the law why can't they have a say on who makes it?
