    1. Plum Creek Literacy Festival‏ @PlumCreekFest 21 Sep 2021

We are saddened to lose several gifted authors who decided to withdraw from Plum Creek after learning the policies of Concordia University, Nebraska, our host site. While the festival won’t be the same without them, we respect their decision and value their feedback.pic.twitter.com/twHLOMNUnZ

But could you address why authors’ books with LGBTQ+ themes were not included? From what I understand, specific books were requested by the authors but were then not placed on the presale list.

It’s a good question and should be addressed. We have included books with these themes and characters in the past, and a book with LGBTQ+ characters (Varian Johnson’s The Parker Inheritance) was included on this year’s list.

One book was not included because it was marked for an older age group than the middle-grade student audience. A second book identified was older, and we weren’t as familiar with it as the other books the author recommended.

We understand these decisions were not communicated clearly when the books were selected for the sale, and we will strive to be better collaborators with authors and illustrators in the future, so they know which books will be available for purchase.

So are you saying it’s coincidence that the pulled books were gay-themed? What books will be sold at your fest that are LGBTQ-themed?

The author didn’t recommend it. The author requested it to be there.

Why do you sell other YA titles then? This doesn’t feel honest. If you’re going to discriminate, own it. If you don’t like the criticism, please consider deciding to be inclusive. This is what kindness is.

Also, if you’re not discriminating against gay representation, why are you noting the presence of a gay character in The Parker Inheritance? This is the “I have a black friend defense.” How many straight characters are included? Do you count those too?

This is unfortunate. Other YA titles were included, so this seems like a false statement. Perhaps it afforded the conference team an opportunity to get familiar with all the books before the festival, rather than not include them.
