      Meredith Whittaker Retweeted Jack Clark

Fair point that can just as easily, and more urgently, be inverted: why don't those building AI for $subject actually engage with the foundational $subject literature? Including the histories of ethics, discrimination, etc in $subject domain...https://twitter.com/jackclarkSF/status/997512143695241217 …

      Meredith Whittaker added,

      Jack Clark @jackclarkSF
This sounds like a loaded question but... Why don't more people who talk about AI $subject (eg, ethics, policy, strategy) actually engage with foundational technical literature? What is the plausible justification for not habitually skimming Arxiv?

A big factor in that is that AI researchers are often not incentivized and educated to do so. But another part of the answer is that subject literature from the social sciences is often perceived as poor quality, more concerned with ideology than with facts (and unaware of that).

Few yrs ago was having debate w senior AI engineer @ FAMGA, I was arguing that every team researching, deving & deploying a system should have sociologist, anthropologist, ethicist etc. (Angry) response was "what makes an ethicist have 'better ethics' than me!?"

(tried to explain that an ethicist wouldn't necessarily be a more 'moral' person by default, but they'd be dedicated full-time to thinking abt ethical consequences, which the engineer cld also be capable of if they also dedicated as much time. This pleased him a bit I think)...

But shocked me that this might be his concern, that somehow we think of an ethicist as being a more moral person. Important to know what goes through the mind of some of these folks.

The problem is that ethics is not properly taught. There are even many philosophers that seem to think ethics is about having values.

I'm sure there are many problems, and indeed that is one of them :) (this particular case seemed to have an ego management issue too, fuelled by a miscommunication, that we claim an ethicist is a smarter, better person than him, the senior engineer).
