I mean (a), primarily. And I know that (a) seems mistaken on the surface because they seem to all have variation in their positions, but I also just straight up don't believe that most of them are engaging in good faith. I think it's profitable to be seen as controversial.

As a result, (b) follows - because there's nothing more banal than just spewing clickbait and feigning surprise that their poor-faith arguments are being misunderstood by their opponents.

What do you think about this lecture by Bret Weinstein? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz0oxIZ3xIg …

Honestly I listened to him make dire warnings about some incident that happened to him somewhere and how it heralded the end of civilization, then I listened to him nonironically use the term SJW while lamenting a lack of humor? Then I saw I was only 3 mins in and turned it off.

Like, why am I going to give an hour of my time to someone who opens with vaguely described dog whistles and insults? Why would anyone?

Did it occur to you that if a group of people from different political camps all sound the same to you that you might be in a political camp yourself?

Of course I am in a political camp - who among us isn’t, today? We have values, each of us, and those values inform our affiliations and our preferences for social organization. I’m not opposed to these guys because they’re political, but because their values are bad.

Further, their values are all bad in the same way. This is the negative space that they all have in common: they are all obsessed with defending some high ideal of liberty but in practice it turns out they just want to be free to have bad values.

What is the difference between good values and bad values? Do you know people that you deeply respect but that have bad values, and do you know people that oppose your politics yet have good values?

This obviously leaves a lot to unpack, as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are shorthand for more nuanced subjective perspectives. But: as a general rule for myself, a value is bad if it causes unnecessary suffering for others.

I am just curious here and don’t mean to impose anything: do you think that groups can suffer or only individuals? Do you think that the suffering of individuals counts more if they are part of certain groups? How do you define oppression?

Groups suffer when the individuals within them suffer the same pain, I guess? Oppression to me is when power dynamics predicate the suffering of one group on the decisions of another, and the supervising group abdicates it’s responsibility to a genral good.
