We already know that different people process phonemes differently. The interesting question is if that depends mostly on language/dialect, or if there are multiple local optima for every group of speakers.

It is much worse: there may not be a relevant global optimum in which perception makes sense of the world, so we'll often use different modeling functions but tend not to notice interpersonal differences because shared language synchronizes our concept level categories somewhat.
