The most humanist goal of AI research is to free people from slavery, to end the need for people to sell their labor to corporate machines in exchange for food, housing, healthcare and the ability to take care of family and loved ones.
The research itself is usually done by people who are intrinsically motivated to do it, and funded by societal leadership that understands that the future and survival of their society depends on it. Cultures that don’t do that simply don’t last.

The clue lies within „intrinsically“: it is bred somewhere else. Leaders arn‘t that wise, they reproduce unwittingly common patterns (intrinsically). And there are plenty of cultures without science & research. All of them lasted very long and some still do.
