yes i can see that but still perhaps don't love it (and certainly don't be cynical); we don't really share purpose with it

interested to find out who is "it" and who get's to define "its" purpose?

My purpose cannot be defined by anyone but myself. You seem to be submitting to external authorities, and the difficulty for you is how to justify the choice of the particular authority. It is as if you are identified at a different level of self?

"You seem to submit to external authorities" < i like to collaborate with my wife (nicer word for submit) & submit to vegetables due to hunger ;-) Those aside, i guess you are getting at "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will"?

Yes, the question is where the will comes from. You seem to terminally submit, and I seem to only be able to do it instrumentally.

This is a very interesting statement, thank you for posing it! What is the source of 'will' (the original generative impulse) and how do we relate to it?

For me, it is the best reward function I can construct and maintain in my own mind. For you, it looks to me like you suck up to the most impressive transcendental authority that you infer from the lies of charismatic sociopaths, um sorry the teachings of enlightened beings?

So (again) you're implying that i am akin to a religious fundamentalist, scared of reality & in need a fictive external source of certainty? I will object (again), and asure you that in my metaphysics there is no need for such a naive god-head. Yet my universe is not dead either.

No, you are not scared of reality. You just live in a reality that is populated by demons reigning over you. It does not help if you insist that they are really not naive demons and also seriously cute and only a little bit alive.

Somehow this convo made me think of Poppers "Objective Knowledge" https://www.amazon.com/Objective-Knowledge-Evolutionary-Karl-Popper/dp/0198750242 … which i have not studied in great detail and remember i found disagreeing with a lot - yet still have to revisit now. Does our convo boil down to "can there be knowledge without a knower"?

Not sure, but I don't think that the concept of knowledge makes sense without a knower, just as there can be no color without light.
