The universe is a weird place, but we form a sense of normalcy in the place of our childhood. Once we leave it, everything may become better, but perhaps it won't ever feel normal and real to us. (I grew up in a country that disappeared. Then again, in a sense most people do.)

It is no accident that the cultural appropriation meme evolved in the social justice context. The tabooed markers indicate purity (absence of original sin = 'privilege'). They entitle the unprivileged to restorative justice (material compensation), so counterfeiting is a problem.

PSA: Google trends without a baseline term for comparison is pretty useless, data is normalised wrt to total number of searches for the given period
-
Nope, they are also useful if you want to track the first derivative of a single trend that starts at absolute zero.

So if you actively search for people to decry for actively searching for people who are appropriating, are you appropriating outrage circuit culture?
-
Totally. There is a tribe of Good People that turn the defense of cultural appropriation against tribes tabooing cultural appropriating into a tribal signifier, and they may not like it if you appropriate their defense of cultural appropriation without living up to their purposes

Still, nobody knows cultural appropriation better than an Australian trying to get lunch in an Outback Steakhouse.
