Two conflicting notions of learning. In science and engineering, the purpose of learning is generalization from past observations to future ones. Learning is stereotyping. In education, the purpose of learning is forming the mind of the student. Learning is indoctrination.

Stereotype has a negative connotation too. Abstraction is a bit more secular.

That is the whole point. I want to point out that negative connotations can shape our understanding of an idea even before we understand what the idea actually means.
