Still, the way Peterson uses language here is nonsensical. Atheist are still humans, and therfore "religious creatures" in the broad sense, but to say that you can't be an atheist because of that is stupid provocative semantics.

I'm willing to forgive his stretching of conventional semantics here. Atheism in the 21st century is definitely a kind of theism. It's a reaction against theistic institutions and beliefs. It's not an alternative to theism. It should really be labeled anti-theism.

Strong v weak atheism Positive belief in no god vs lack of belief Seems like most(?) atheists in former camp Actually I think I was going off on the general case of this yesterday hm

lack of belief is just a non-committal position. it's either apathy or agnosticism (in the conventional, not original sense). we have so many cultural fences in our minds that most people get to the border and set up a tent city rather than venture out into the unknown.

It is a lack of identification with the non-belief. "I don't believe that whales are a kind of fish" will not spawn cults. Atheism as a movement is based on an identification with a belief, which gives rise to a culture war.

precisely. this is why I'm calling it anti-theism rather than atheism.

possibly comes in 2 variants? negative para-theism (anti-theism) and positive para-theism (spiritual but not religious)?

No, I mean that it constructs a cult from the idea of not joining a cult. It would even work for agnosticism, ie one could make a cult about being indecisive about joining a cult
