More important than the notion of "goal directed" is "purpose serving". Purposes are models of needs. Needs generate rewards (when frustrated or satisfied), purposes align our behavior.

Aren't the two almost equivalent? Goal-directedness has maybe a stronger connotation of a singular reward and purpose serving of a reoccurring reward?

A goal is an event that is pursued by behavior because it is associated with the satisfaction of a need. A purpose is the principle served by that behavior. Goals tend to be concrete (like "going to bed early"), purposes tend to be abstract projections (like "support my friends")
