Aren't the two almost equivalent? Goal-directedness has maybe a stronger connotation of a singular reward and purpose serving of a reoccurring reward?

A goal is an event that is pursued by behavior because it is associated with the satisfaction of a need. A purpose is the principle served by that behavior. Goals tend to be concrete (like "going to bed early"), purposes tend to be abstract projections (like "support my friends")

Owing to the fact we are often unsuccessful in achievements of “goals”, the “purpose serving” sounds more humble.
