I just noticed that when a friend told me that he struggles for ways to become more sincere, and it struck me that sincerity is actually an instrumental value, and his subconscious knows that already, so it does not play along

Can you break down what's terminal and what's instrumental? Like, I kind of want to be sincere, because I think it would be more comfortable in the long run.

So like, values which you have because you expect rewards are instrumental, and values which you have just for funsies are terminal?

Terminal values represent your ultimate personal purposes. I think we construct them in the process of creating full personal integrity, which involves making all behaviors accountable to each other, and usually requires subsuming them under a small set of principles.

Instrumental values are conditional to promoting policies that serve the terminal values. To my mind, truth seems terminal, followed by personal sustainability. That makes my other values, like integrity, love, goodness, kindness, sincerity, beauty and hedonism instrumental.
