In computer science citing old papers, like McCarthy,'59 (original LISP report), is rare enough to be a signal. In an econ paper, just saw a citation to Smith,'59—that's Adam Smith, 1759. Maybe in theology people are still citing Apostle Paul, 59 (with no apostrophe)
