Much like boolean algebra isn't fundamental to computing & programming in an abstract sense, but rather is an arbitrary low-level design choice, I don't think brains are fundamental to intelligence. I'd posit the most compact substrate for defining cognition is mathematics.

Classical mathematics is unfortunately timeless, so we want to narrow it down to constructionist mathematics, which happens to be identical to computation. Boolean algebra is simply one of the many automata that equivalently define universal computation. Even NAND is enough.

The correct way to describe cognition is through physics. Mathematics is just a branch of physics. Just as philosophy is just a branch of psychology. All useful abstractions are grounded in reality.

Ugh. I am not sure if I can understand what you get out of this kind of sloppy thinking.

Perhaps you need references? @GeorgeLakoff Philosophy is just a branch of Psychology. David Hestenes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItGlUbFBFfc … . Any questions?

Yes, I know their arguments. I don't think that they are convincing. You may have noticed that some (even good!) psychologists tend not to have a deep understanding of mathematics.

I have a problem starting right in with phrase "correct way to describe cognition", when we haven't even laid out a purpose for our description. Our description will not be the thing itself in any case, and hence my invocation of "the map is not the territory" Korzybski!

... except if cognition is a computational phenomenon to begin with. In which case the correct way to describe it might be a computational one.

I agree here that if in fact cognition is computational then it bounds what is accessible through mathematics (i.e. closed form solutions). At best, math can describe an approximate model.
