It is a valid concern. Brilliant people who have written excellent science fiction in the past have seen their vision become reality. We're at the dawn of an age that may see the fruition of works such as Matrix, Terminator, Ex Machina, and the like.

I think that the mind itself extends our particular brain( and body) which does not mean that “the brain is not ours” and our mind is not “the main engine”. More importantly: our mind and body work bidirectionaly, e.g. a gut(and imune system)influences brain functions.

So it is all more complicated and under multiple “controls”...to avoid risks you have mentioned.
