The Syrians are collateral damage in a conflict that is mostly between the West and Russia, I think.

Failure to make peace between the big powers means the little guys will be smashed. The war keeps popping up in new places like whack a mole.

Afghanistan was a cold war casualty, too. As were numerous other countries. I don't really think Syria is special, but it may have been the result of the Ukraine situation.

I think the people who did the strikes today may have felt they are being left out of a deal. The alliances are very insecure and nobody seems to have the smarts to do diplomacy. https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2018/04/iran-astana-process-trilateral-summit-ankara-turkey-russia.html …

The west has such ridiculous double standards that I wonder if anybody can really believe this story is about Assad. Which despotic ruler in that desertified landmass of the middle-east is a paragon of virtue? The war is about natural resources and trade routes, not about people.

Unfortunately, I don't think any single power is interested in stability in Syria. Not Iran, Russia or Turkey. And of course not the Sunni Islamic states to the south, or their western friends. Everybody wants to destabilize the land and grab a share in the pie. Sheer stupidity.

I don't think that the West has Syria's instability as a primary goal, but accepts it as unfortunate byproduct, to weaken Russia. Almost everyone except for the insurgents would prefer Syria to be stable, I think.

Short-term thinking which may not take too long to backfire. This is what I meant when I said alliances are shifting rapidly. Instability directly increases this entropy. This is a waste of potential for USA to secure a global place of power for itself that is secure and stable.
