I think that taking AGI seriously requires a reasonable amount of familiarity with cognitive science, to see how we might figure out AGI even in principle. For people with a mainly computer science background, general intelligence looks more like an incomprehensible black box.

(either that, or *no* compsci background and no understanding of why AGI might even be hard. But a mostly traditional compsci background -> the narrowness of everything we do right now keeps staring you in the face, and it's really hard to see anything else being plausible)
