I'm not a religious person, but surely atheists have better arguments than this! If so, why can brains make computers but computers can't make brains?https://twitter.com/Micksparklfc/status/974646192054439936 …

(since I was mentioned here:) If brains are computers, it follows that computers are made by computers. If brains are large, complicated computers set up in a very specific way that we have not fully figured out yet, it would not be surprising that brains cannot make brains yet.

"set up" is a transitive verb. It implies some demiurgic force. This is one reason the computer metaphor seems so odd to me, especially coming from atheists. Computers are tools that someone created to serve a purpose. Brains are not.

I've always thought there was a strong current in new atheist discourse supporting the idea that evolution "designed" people with a purpose. I think their ontology is like economists': we aren't *really* ruled by pure greed, but for all intents and purposes we act like we are

yes they reject all ascriptions of intentionality to non-human nature, unless it's imputing capitalist motives to i.e., strands of DNA, or course, in which case it's totally fine.

Intentionality is a way of describing effects of a system on another that interprets them as actions in the service of a goal. In this sense, evolution does not have intentions (it has no agency), but dogs and corporations do. Even self-driving cars might be described in this way

we're both obviously referring to the "selfish gene" hypothesis please don't play dumb, this is getting boring. And to skip a step in the inevitable argument, I know it's claimed to be a mere metaphor, but by those who'd instantly condemn any other similar "metaphorical" move

Perhaps read the book, not the title? (Its main contribution was to point out to a lay audience that the unit of evolution is not the organism but the genome. It does not ascibe telos or intention to evolution or genes.)
