What annoys me is that both positive and negative articles are misinterpreting what the company said. It's either they can upload your mind, or want people to commit suicide. Company is just claiming a cheaper and better way to preserve the brain.https://twitter.com/Plinz/status/974050655181647872 …

Striving for physical immortality might not be a sign of profound wisdom, but I find it more endearing than "OMG the evil outgroup wants to outlive me" outrage. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/610456/a-startup-is-pitching-a-mind-uploading-service-that-is-100-percent-fatal/ …

Bad incentives: All media are optimizing for generating attention, which means simulating relevance to humans. "Someone wants to kill you" > "someone wants to make you immortal" > "someone wants to conserve brains".

The founder of the company saying it's 100 percent fatal when the service claims the opposite outcome in the longer term isn't helping.

The substance they are using is fatal, yes. It's cheaper than traditional cryonics for a reason. The claim is that compared to freezing there would be less damage to the brain, too. Recreating the preserved "snapshot" of your brain is up to future technology.

It's not okay if that person is a journalist writing about it. That kind of reporting also does disservice to the people that just read the title. The hope is the title won't be misleading.

The title's most eye catching phrase is a direct quote from the company's founder.

I think the Tech Review article (which is fine in itself) was the source for the other articles that kept popping. Their content did distort the original article.

It's best to start the process when the brain is fresh/alive, to minimize the damage. There is a lot of wishful thinking involved, as it is in trading all cryonics. Would future people care to revive us? What is being preserved, and how much?

The company is open about the fact that you're signing up to die, and putting your faith in the future. They don't seem to be tricking people into suicide, as some articles claimed.

Obviously. And euthanasia is currently only legal when you have a terminal illness. And not even in Massachusetts, afaik. And I seriously prefer to die under anesthesia at a time of my choosing rather than drowning in liquid in my lungs or be poisoned by liver failure etc.

It could be that people aren't comfortable with that idea of assisted suicide. Or some interpreting it as profiting from people killing themselves.10k isn't even that much compared to freezing your head (30k) or full body (200k). A funeral (burial) in US costs at least 7k.

Massachusetts canceled a proposal for a (very restrictive) law that would have allowed assisted suicide. People are in deep denial about death I think, because they are too afraid to look at it. That's why they don't have empathy with the dying, including their future selves.

At least until your resurrected brain starts having memories of the pain it experienced under that last round of anesthesia. Nevertheless, I agree.
