I think that this is clearly wrong. My Roomba reacts to its environment, and it is certainly not conscious. A neural learning algorithm that improves future performance based on past interactions is also usually not self aware.

Addiction is not pleasure seeking per se. A part of your nervous system decides that a behavior is useful, while another, higher level one decides that it is not, yet the former refuses to submit to the latter. Pleasure is just a reinforcement event.
