Society is a technology for living together without killing each other too much. Part of sociology is a science, considering existing social dynamics. Part of it is tackling the big engineering problem of incrementally optimizing society for righteousness. The two coexist.
Morality (~righteousness) and ethics (~systems of principled social interaction with shared purposes and conflicting interests) should be conflated less. And history makes a lot more sense when understood as evolutionary dynamics, not moral dynamics.

The righteousness part of sociology is a set of parasitic cults that has largely strangled the scientific part.
