As I learn more, my distrust in governments is not getting smaller, but my distrust in revolutionaries is increasing. Most people are oblivious to the intricacy and fragility of the social structures that got us where we are, and ideology tends to project simplistic solutions.

Most revolutionary impulses come from young people that have internalized the just world propaganda that our societies indoctrinate them with in school and now notice that its divergence from reality cannot be overcome within the present system.

A system of governance is not a moral institution or a source of meaning and self worth, but a platform for negotiating the conditions of human survival. In this sense, the current mode of liberal democracy probably offers more options than anything else in human history.

Liberalism is extremely concerned with ethics, i.e. the principled negotiation of conflicts of purpose of interest and purpose, while treating others as moral subjects. The alternative is totalitarianism, which usually requires higher degrees of violence and is hard to innovate.
