The NSA is not targeting Foxconn or other Chinese phone makers. I think it is not unreasonable to assume that not only the US installs backdoors, and someone really saw grounds to be upset.

The problem is game theoretic: if loggers get more individual benefit than they create individual harm, you need regulation to avoid tragedy of the commons, and if intact forests don't generate profits they cannot exert the same influence on regulators as logging companies.

What would make this game more sane is a redefinition of "profit" to attribute a more accurate "value" to the forrest (ecosystem services etc). Humanity has gone through many such "value shifts", considering we used to mass kill each other for things like tee & salt not long ago

It is scary that people will generally believe what they think to be in their best interest to believe, even if it involves discarding rationality. And from a certain perspective they may even be right! Nothing beats having the beliefs that allow you to best feed your kids.

But that is really a function of the profits than can be made with mining, political stability for tourism, number of people in US and Canada that can afford eco tours etc. I don't suggest that creating better conditions is pointless, but the success depends on external factors.
