I understand shock and anguish of the parents, but I don't think it necessarily says very much about society, except that a single confused individual in a park was very worried about child neglect, and the police in the area had enough resources to check that everything was ok.

What should have been done instead? Child neglect happens, overeager bystanders happen, people unaware of autism or the difficulty of raising children happen, the police quickly understood.

Btw, I think the article is good because it makes more people aware if the problem, but not necessarily to strengthen our autistic identities.
