One thing I *can* say is that, in my experience, what Tibetan monastics believe has very little to do with scripture—even those who can quote it extensively. In practice, it’s a typical folk religion: mostly about spooks, gods, and magical procedures that ensure good luck.
I wonder if having children has a larger effect on losing fear of loss of individual self than education + meditation.

Plausible! But note again that the study didn’t look at meditators at all.

The Tibetan monastics were meditators (meditation is part of daily practice in monasteries, as you might imagine). They just weren’t *super* meditators, who had 10,000+ hours of meditation under their belt.
