The brain's internal operation cannot be based on symbol manipulation, IMO. It's self-referential: you have to know the meaning of the symbols before you can manipulate them. That is, you are intelligent without the very thing that is required for intelligence. Illogical.

BTW, in spite of the vociferous denials in mainstream AI, deep learning is symbolic AI or GOFAI. Labels are symbols. They assume that the answer is known before it is even learned. This is the opposite of intelligence.
