I think this is a very interesting dichotomy. I was forced to think about this earlier today & I thought that our conceptions of "patriarchy" & "egalitarianism" are colored by Western values. So if by their definition Islam is patriarchal then it would have negative connotations.

But then again if by their definition Islam is patriarchal and the term "patriarchy" is constructed by the West to mean what it means to us globally today, then by those standards Islam is patriarchal or as Joscha says here, "nothing is".https://twitter.com/Plinz/status/959114792693895169 …

Things always get hairy when a descriptive term acquires prescriptive meanings. In western society, many people vehemently disagree about the exact meaning of "patriarchy", "sexism", "bigotry" etc. but agree that it is bad, so the terms get adapted to what each group dislikes.

The question when using the word "patriarchy" descriptively is whether we have a possibly way of using the word to mean a neutral state of affairs. The question is not if Islam is bad, but if Islam assigns more power over political, economic and administrative decisions to men.
