But isn't there a gradient wherever you are? That plus your map of the known world should at least give you some rough directions where to head off to if you want to reach the unknown territory where the creative solution hides.

Without ordering possible solutions in a locally flat space, how could there be directions? And often, you will have to create such an ordering function for the first time.
