Yes I concur. There is good evidence culturally evolved religions and ideologies aid in group cooperation (and out group hate). See book big gods. For instance.

But that book (and corresponding discussions in cultural evo lit) leaves out the fact that people have strong incentives to take on these beliefs. They r not being “fooled” (as the memes/Dawkins/dennet story claims) or exploited for group benefits (as Henrich and big gods claim)
