Just had one if these long discussions with a smart mathematician, and now I notice that sometimes I get the impression that computationalism (the only working philosophical edifice left) is non-obvious to 90% of people. I find that genuinely puzzling.

are those 90% also the people who have no idea how computers work?

No, I mean 90% of those who have some formal education and have seriously thought about epistemology and metaphysics. How could they have an informed opinion otherwise?

By non-obvious you mean those people will follow your opinion, but only after long discussions? And you would expect shorter ones?

No, I mean that a lot of people since LaMettrie have arrived independently on it, since all building blocks are now readily available. My own influence on others is at best irrelevant in this regard (you don't want others to share your opinions just because of your influence).
