This is appealing philosophy and perhaps even the beginnings of a theory but there's a lack of evidence, right? It also seems like another case of every generation seeing the world through the lense of their technology du jour.

I think it is simply the only theory that can generate all observables from first principles. Epistemologically, we cannot get more basic than discernible differences (information) and regular changes (computation). We can explain how we got to matter and energy from there.
