Comments like this make me wonder what kind of depression we're talking about. This fits my operating model of Major Depressive Disorder (which I'm diagnosed with), but is necessarily ill equiped to deal with postpartum depression, for example.

Major depression is usually diagnosed when symptoms last longer than a couple of weeks, so it catches a wide spectrum of cases (16M adults in the US alone).

(That probably means that the majority—but certainly not all!—of cases that are diagnosed as major depression are exogenous, and may respond better to hacking the mental software than to *only* hacking the mental hardware.)
