Btw. this does not mean: "man up" etc. Depression is not a choice, but a regulation problem. We are not the masters of our regulation, but its result.

Yes, depression and anxiety are a reaction to an environment that one cannot adapt to (an unhealthy one), but you can't fix that at all with drugs. They are the fire alarm of the body. The only solution is to figure out what's missing in the environment (or move environments).

Sometimes depression is endogenous, i.e. not caused by the environment or the individual's trajectory though it. Also, almost all successful treatment of non-endogenous conditions will have to address self-modeling defects.

I thought that this is a very bad headline. Depression can have many causes, and may require very different treatments.

Depression is not a homogeneous experience with a simply stated cause. I've struggled with treatment resistant depression my whole life and have sampled the full range of interventions. When it returns it has a lfe of its own.

I'm currently on 4 meds including a clinical trial of ketamine. I use a light box, go to the gym, and keep a careful schedule. I am in remission and hope to stay that way but history has a way of repeating itself.

The crucial question in those cases is what kind of intervention (or medication) is most effective. Based on the well documented horrendous success rates of traditional pharmaceuticals for depression, alternatives (incl. Psychedelic therapy) should be considered.

" The analytical rumination (AR) hypothesis proposes that depression is an adaptation that evolved as a response to complex problems and whose function is to minimize disruption of rumination and sustain analysis of complex problems." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2734449/ …
