This represents a misreading of my paper. I asked if we would hit a wall, and impicitly said no, provided that we started doing other stuff like adding in symbol-manipulating primitives. If if we do that, we can avoid the wall. I’m just suggesting how we ought to steer. @Plinzhttps://twitter.com/dougblank/status/950393794377240576 …

Replying to @GaryMarcus @Plinz
I think if you expanded your suggestion to include making networks have better internal categorical representations, and to provide for more flexible, dynamic "thinking-like" processes, everyone would agree with you. And since that is where we are headed anyway, there is no wall.

Flexible, dynamic "thinking-like" processes might well exhibit sufficient properties of symbolic computations. At least if buying into some sort of computational theory of mind, and associated PSSH version; without which the entire AI project would seem without foundations.

Is there any serious, developed noncomputational theory of mind?

#SEP entry pays attention also to a fair share of critics of (different flavors of) CTMs: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/computational-mind/ … Generally many variants of 4E#cognition claim to be non-computational. (IMHO often making up straw man arguments about what CTMs are, but who am I to decide...)1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Do you see a way to take strong enactivism seriously as a philosophical enterprise?

I personally have serious doubts concerning the endeavour, but as always in absence of evidence beyond reasonable doubt: Who am I to give a final verdict...

I don't think anybody expects you to give a final verdict before everyone else is dead, but I would certainly approve if you'd dare to mount the stallion of righteous philosophical fury, smite the imbeciles, and accept the wrath of the mediocre.

@LorijnSZ told me to tell you that I already do - I just can't fight all the battles everywhere at the same time. And, of course, if I do, there are few left standing to tell the tale. ;)0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
