Uber defined as a "ploy by the finance industry to profit off the destruction of unionized companies and public transit" sounds just about right.https://twitter.com/PostCultRev/status/949719890021171200 …

FUN FACT: Uber lost about $5B last year. If fares were set high enough to just break even they would cost more than a traditional taxi. Every rideshare you take is subsidized by the finance industry in a ploy to profit off the destruction of unionized companies and public transit

More accurately, Uber is redistributing the money of rich people to drivers and customers. The supply of Uber rides tracks demand at the current price point.

While in theory this might be the plan, the well documented track-record of their management and their financiers tells a rather different story.

I am not sure if it is even valid at the theoretical level. Uber is based on price arbitrage, artificially cutting prices to monopolize the market. This huge negative balance sheet is filled up by free money printed by the US Fed. This model is not possible in any other country.

Once the market is monopolized, of course, you dictate the terms. You are the sole middleman between producer and consumer. Both will perish if you pull out of the market. It will be in the entire market's (entire country's) interest to keep you alive.

Until recently, the sole middleman were very profitable taxi companies, which rent out licenses at horrendous prices. Where I live, cab drivers tended to be unpleasant, refuse to take cards, often avoid direct routes, or even don’t know their way.

As with everything, there is good and bad in Uber (& this model of biz). They have innovated & do serve some market demand - not denying that. Yet, their value system, operations style and ownership structure is destructive and not inline with community interest in my opinion.

I think we have already established that capitalism is not in line with community interests, but it works better than all alternatives that have been tried so far. :)
