Just had one if these long discussions with a smart mathematician, and now I notice that sometimes I get the impression that computationalism (the only working philosophical edifice left) is non-obvious to 90% of people. I find that genuinely puzzling.

Even dualism and the different versions of idealism seem to require a computational foundation. Every supernatural entity must ultimately have natural causes (even if those are in a parent universe).

Great thread, cheers! Question 1: How does computationalism work inside an infinite/timeless system? Question 2: How are you approaching Gödel's incompleteness theorems?

1.a Eternalist time is simply a perspective shift due to a timeless observer, i.e. the observer is a function that is implemented or projected outside of the causal sequence of the observed system.

If I recall, David Deutsch seemed to allow for the possibility of kinds of computation different than what is possible in this universe (say, infinite computations rather than finite, for example). Do you see that as possible, and would it change anything here?

I would not know how to recognize a hypercomputation in the wild (infinite resolution is not observable, I think), and I don't know how to construct a hypercomputer a priori.

Mathematics is just the domain of formal languages. Of course it is independent from reality. And most of it is uncomputable. Constructive mathematics is the subset of mathematics that is computational, but computation should better be treated as a separate class.

There can be no grounding in anything but information. The meaning of information is its relationship to changes in other information.

Not mathematics but computation. If the universe generates patterns it must implement some transition function.
