I don’t understand. Why do the trumps bother to make arguments? Why aren’t they just like “he’s not part of our alliance. He is. This policy doesn’t help us or our allies. This does”? Like why bother w/ the (very thin) veneer that their stance is motivated by values / facts?https://twitter.com/donaldjtrumpjr/status/948678893610913793 …

Isn't that exactly what he's doing? Calling this an "argument" seems a bit generous. More like, "he's gone over to the dark side"...

Oh hmm. U r largely right. But it’s not saying he was bad to us so we will be bad to him. He is saying he is a bad person in general so everyone should be bad to him. But true. In this case the veneer is thinner than usual

Black hat/white hat moralism is a useful tool for reinforcing tribalism: "they're all evil and we're all good, so better stay loyal to us"

Always does, to the tribally-minded (which is most people)

I think that most people are supratribal, i.e. their ingroup is defined by shared values and totems, while the Trumps' ingroup is literally tribal, i.e. a small clan in a supratribal world.
