I am sure that we are not going to be the last universally intelligent species on earth, but what shocks me is that we are apparently the first.

The human form evolves on every planet that has the conditions for it. The "gods" mentioned in all cultures were humans from other planets. And they were here long before us earthlings.

Given the improbability of FTL travel and the inhospitability of Mars and Venus, it appears less likely that such gods came from from other planets than all the alternatives. There is also the motivational problem: rational aliens won't want to help us (Dark Forest Hypothesis).

Sooner or later we'll find the habitats the dinosaurs built on the moon. Or if we don't, the evolved crows that succeed us will.

Why don't we find even a few booster stages? Or at least a few screws?

They were. General intelligence required discovering Turing complete languages and proper epistemology, which in turn required centuries of collective intelligence financed by agricultural surplus, which in turn required fucking up individual epistemology to make us religious.

Eukaryotic life has only been around for 1.5Bn years, so it must have been after that. You are right; I'd expect that a universally problem solving species would become a tool using apex predator (quite certain to leave traces), but perhaps they didn't get to their singularity.

The first one known to us. We don't know the probability of life, but I suspect that it is low, so we might well be the first life. OTOH, it might be conceivable that general intelligent machinery is more likely to spontaneously form than evolvable self-replicators.
