In the long run, people will tend to adopt the beliefs and values they consider to be in their best interest, i.e. which help them to best navigate the universe around them. Free speech will speed up that convergence.
Btw., in a system where your success depends on your rational ability (like getting tenure in a STEM field), it can be entirely rational to reject the criteria of rationality if you think you cannot win otherwise.

well said & true. The old chaos magick doctrine of "belief is just a tool", or the discordian notion of "reality engineering", or the works of Vladislav Surkov in the current Russian gov all come to mind.

At some point people will always rediscover the old Bacon doctrine, too: confidence in belief equals weight of evidence to support it
